The key to a happy and satisfying life for me is to refuse to compete for mainstream status. I would lose if I did — I lack things like money and beauty and now youth. Can’t sing or dance. Not interested in things like fashion or sports or pop culture. Instead, I’ve designed my own category and naturally I excel in it! In fact, I’m the very best in the whole world at being me!

Being the best at being me involves various creative endeavors like writing, cooking and curating my surroundings. It also includes motherhood/grandmotherhood — I rejected a lot of parenting norms and did things my own way. My daughter followed my example. Having children is the ultimate creative act!

I would encourage everyone to disregard ultimately meaningless status symbols. Cancel Netflix. (I did some months ago.) Spend time with interesting people who are of no interest to the cool set.

Also, since the F word came up, have as much sex as possible! Why on earth would anyone choose Netflix over that?!?Choose a partner based on their goodness, kindness and intelligence and for having the right sort of weirdness compatible with your own.

Consume less and create more. You’ll have a more unique and satisfying life — or so it seems to me. To go along with the crowd often seems tedious. Even if you “win,” you have nothing of value.

This is a late hour for those of us in Europe. I will have to miss it and hope you capture it, vernacular and all, for a listen later in the week.
