I remember an old saying, "all politics is local" or something like that. Well, it's true in a perverse sort of way. Politicians think locally as far as getting reelected and that is always their first priority. So, looking tough on China, for example, during the current term helps secure another term and that matters more to them than long-term consequences of their actions as members of either house. The result is legislation that is national is really designed for how it will impact the next election, a poor approach to getting the best legislation for the long-term interest of the country. The Constitution is pretty amazing, but not flawless.

I’m voting for the popularity of tennis in the 80’s and the subconscious shape of the tennis can as the key to Pringle’s success. As to competing with China -John has been arguing for decades that if Americans don’t work harder - longer hours etc- we won’t be able to compete.
