Personal Note: I have added quite a few new subscribers today, largely thanks to Tyler Cowen graciously including my last post in his Marginal Revolution’s Sunday assorted links. https://marginalrevolution.com I hold myself to a 1,000 word limit per post, because while my substack is free, your time is valuable! Thanks for joining.
Really well said. There are so many more graceful and efficacious ways to address obvious errors. What a treat to read Churchill’s words. As you said - magic!
David, this is a beautiful piece. Thank you! My view of both Churchill and Chaimberlain are changed. A favorite professor of mine in undergraduate school instilled in me this piece of Christian doctrine: Original Sin is having to make decisions for which we can not know the consequences. Your essay makes that truth beautifully real for me.
Well, that is what we all are but it gives me, the reader, no context for your thoughts and thus very hard to judge (not to mention, takes a lot of work)
Fair enough. I mean I don't expect your personal life story and home address, I don't even care if you're using a pen name, but, there's a huge amount to be read (one might say infinite) on this here Internet and....... well, you know, mortality and all that.
Lifelong New Yorker, 60, married 36 years, three adult children, main occupation has been investments, but reading and writing have always been a passion. Indulging in that passion through this sub stack. Favorite sub stackers include Astral Codex (when i can understand the subject), Matt Labash (funniest), Freddie DeBoer. Favorite podcast is Conversations with Tyler. Politically independent. Favorite books: Swann's Way and Lolita. Lately have been reading more short stories than novels.
Love this piece, David! Agreed that an ITYS is only worthy when validating something positive. Also, enjoyed the historical weaving and demonstration of Churchill's grace. x

Loved this. Thank you.
Once again we are reminded of the singular greatness of Churchill's leadership, and of his many talents, including oratory.
Completely agree that no one appreciates being told ITYS.
And thanks for sharing these shining examples of Churchill’s powerful and gracious command of language.

Who are you and why should I be reading you?
For purposes of this substack, I suppose I am what I write.

let me ponder that

Perhaps more than you wanted.
Well, knowing Lolita is one of your 2 favorite books is a bit TMI, but I'll just assume it's Nabokov's great writing that is the appeal. Thanks.

Great piece!
