The editors at the NYT and the Washington Post who decide the size of headlines and where to place stories have an influential job. They are telling their readers what is most newsworthy. What we should pay attention to. What might be most exigent to my world and to your world.
It's something like a literary fluke that "The Satanic Verses" is the one most people have heard of, and if they are the reading type, might start with.
That said, I discovered Nabokov because of that one book of his that caused such a stir, so whatever works.
Rushdie aside, and I intend no disrepect, I would long ago have relegated Trump to the lower level of the front page, and most reports of Trump would not be on the front page at all. Front page Trump new would, to me, have to be about his pursuit by justice, preferably an indictment and ideally a conviction. All other mentions of Trump I'd place somewhere in the middle fold, or in small print somewhere, for most of it is not truly news and, instead, the media keep his name in the public eye serving his ego and, possibly, fueling his political ambition. Certainly, it all helps him in his grift (fundraising) because, at the least, he can keep crying to potential donors that he is being attacked and needs their help in defending himself and, by proxy, them. I have always held CNN largely accountable for his election in 2016. Without the enormous amount of free publicity they gave him, he would have lost the election. re: the FL search, I would have placed it at the top as a newsworthy note. His protestations and statements etc, etc would not have seen my first page.
His book, Joseph Anton: A Memoir, might be another good one as it is his life under the Fatwa.
