Ah David, do you not think that our government(Biden administration) has shown that any other life is more important than an American life. Almost every single thing they have done from open borders to the Ukraine shows that an American life is the least important of all. And omg, if that American happens to be conservative-well doesn’t count for very much of anything.
The problem is that right now there are no (Republican) votes to be gained by supporting more funds to fight covid, and certainly not to fight future variants that may never happen. Voting to avoid future catastrophes is way too sophisticated for the average voter. Plus, another wave of covid infections and deaths just before the midterms can happily be blamed on Biden, making America's descent into The Handmaid's Tale all the more certain. Add to that that a covid resurgence will likely knock another year or so off American life expectancy, which will let those who live pay less tax, so why would any Republican support that kind of 'reckless' spending?
It's true that the Republicans were the ones blocking the Covid bill, but it's lamentable that the administration and the Democrats seemed to fold so readily. I suppose I was venting my frustration at the result rather than how we got to the result.
Maybe you should write a piece about the frustrating fecklessness of the Democrats? For instance, the disappearance of the very effective Child Tax Credit without a ripple or a whimper, or the failure so far of the DOJ to prosecute the previous president, or more generally the capitulation to Manchin and the GOP on Build Back Better, getting rid of the filibuster, etc. Something may be happening behind the scenes, but I haven't seen anything . . .
Why? Because protecting the underdog is bipartisan issue, and America has a history of policing the bullies of the world, and Biden has run on being a bridge-building to heal the political divide in this country. As for funding and attending to urgent domestic issues, I blame the Democrats who are unwilling to get rid of the filibuster that stops bills from moving forward in congress because they might want to use it themselves in a later administration. That's like being unwilling to use a fire extinguisher while your neighbor's house is burning down because you might want to use it if your own house catches on fire one day, while ignoring that allowing your neighbor's house to burn to the ground will inevitably lead to your own house catching on fire. MLK pointed out that if you don't stand up for other people's rights even if they don't apply to you, you can't expect them to stand up for yours. Get rid of the KKK-created filibuster and we can make progress while a Democrat is still in the White House and we have just enough congresspeople to have a majority vote.
It will be interesting to see if our policy of a compete defeat of Russia will turn out to be successful or good for anyone, least of all Ukraine. To use a literary reference, I'm starting to think America in its foreign policy is like Tom and Daisy Buchanan, breaking things and leaving messes for others to attend to.
The Democrats do not have the votes to end the filibuster, but i'm disappointed in both parties for not getting priorities right, at least as I see them.

did you actually read the article? Biden is trying to save Americans from Covid and congress (republicans) is not passing covid bill.
